2010 Middle and High School
Educational Film Programs

The Phoenix Film Festival and IFP-Phoenix invite teachers and students to participate in up to four days of exciting educational opportunities for Middle and High School student school groups during the Phoenix Film Festival.

Each day different aspects of filmmaking will be explored with professionals and students will view films made by their peers. From film lovers to filmmakers, and from writers to actors, these seminars are a great way to compliment your school’s current curriculum with real world application.

Filmmaking From the Pros: ACTION!
Friday, April 9, 2010

This day is for any film-loving student!  The competition and showcase filmmakers that have films in the Phoenix Film Festival will spend their morning with the students discussing their projects, getting into the business and answers their questions.  Documentary filmmakers, narrative filmmakers and celebrities take part in this workshop.

Screenwriting: From Script to Screen, ASAP!
Monday, April 12, 2010

Students explore the screenwriting process through a panel discussion with experts and group breakout sessions.  Students will write a 2-3-page script and a logline with the given components and will hear their logline pitched.  Selected scripts will be read aloud by local actors, which allows students to hear their work and think about revisions.  One script will be chosen for use throughout the rest of the series; it will go through acting/auditions on Wednesday and pre-production/production on Thursday.

Acting Makes a Better Filmmaker!
Wednesday, April 14, 2010

On this day, acting will take center stage!  Whether you are an aspiring actor, director, casting director, or lighting technician, understanding the acting process will make you better at what you do.  The Industry guest panel will shed light on how the actor prepares, auditions and performs for film. They will also address how to market yourself to get the jobs you want.  For the breakout session, the panel will put students through the audition process, including callbacks and final callbacks.  We also will shoot some of the script for the day so that the students can get a feel and experience how a real film set runs and the time and patience it takes to get a scene "in the can".  The participants will really be able to get a sense for what it takes to be in the biz!

Film Production: Ready…Set…FILM!
Thursday, April 15, 2010

Using the student-written script from Monday and the acting skills learned on Wednesday, students are ready to produce and shoot this script.  Through panel discussions and breakout sessions, students will conceptualize a storyboard, set up shots, and film some "takes" of the script.  The pre-production and production process is covered and students will learn how to avoid the common traps that will mark their films as “novice”.

All four seminars take place from 9 am – 2 pm at the 2010 Phoenix Film Festival held at Harkins Scottsdale/101 Theatres. School groups may sign up for one to four days!  Tickets are $10 per student/chaperone per day; teachers are complimentary. A box lunch and materials are included. Pre-registration through the schools is required.

Registration is open through March 28, 2010.
